Ercan Anbarci and Serge Schetinin help Melsunger citizens with migration background

MELSUNGEN. Where different cultures meet, prejudice and misunderstanding ensue. On either side. We now have two cultural interpreters to improve communication between families with Turkish or Russian origins in Melsungen on the one and German institutions on the other hand. They are Ercan Anbarci and Serge Schetinin.
The two pedagogues have been working for Jugendhilfe Melsungen for a while already. Now families can come to the new rooms of the Arbeitskreis Gemeindenahe Gesundheitsversorgung (AKGG) in Flämmergasse 4 for advice once per month. This is not only about bridging language barriers, but also about cultural ones.
Expansion of the Offer
Two years ago, Dörte Wahlen, youth welfare manager at AKGG, and Volker Wiegand, principal of the Gesamtschule secondary school and member of the Förderverein Zukunftsfähiges Melsungen, had the idea of establishing culture interpreters. It is a fact that we have a demand for them. The AKGG determined that about 70 Turkish and 80 Russian families are living in Melsungen.
Ercan Anbarci already made first experience as a culture interpreter. "Up to now, most problems that needed mediation had to do with schools and kindergartens," says the 43-old. For example, parents of Turkish origin face problems choosing the right school type for their children, since their home country does not offer any comparable educational structure. "Trust is built faster if someone speaking their native language and who is familiar with their culture is present to mediate," says Anbarci. He studied in Germany and has been working for the Melsungen youth aid institution for a decade.
Serge Schetinin joined in two years ago. He is 51 years old and originally from Russia; he has been living in Germany for nine years. Back home, he worked in an orphanage and taught German in a school. "We can help. People just need the courage to come see us," says Schetinin.
From now on, the cultural interpreters will no longer concentrate on educational questions only, but also offer help with other difficulties. "For example with any applications families have to fill in and do not understand – or if there's problems in the neighbourhood," says Dörte Wahlen.
This offer is financially supported by the Förderverein für ein zukunftsfähiges Melsungen and the VR-Bank. "We are still at our very beginnings. We have about 1800 Euros for one year. We use this to pay for 37 consulting hours per year;" explains Dörte Wahlen.
